freeze! Kurt Vile - Childish Prodigy 2009

Childish Prodigy é o novo disco do senhor Kurt Vile, lançado em Outubro deste ano, com a Matador Records. Depois das produções caseiras que acabaram por ser editadas com a woodsist, God Is Saying This To You e Constant Hitmaker, o guitarrista principal da banda The War on Drugs assina agora com a editora dos Yo La Tengo e Jay Reatard.

Em modo de contador de histórias, Kurt Vile provoca-nos em Dead Alive, um dos mais sentidos temas deste disco. Por outro lado, a forte personalidade deste rapaz do Estado da Pennsylvania conforta-nos com temas como He's Alright ou com a tranquilidade de Blackberry Song. Para além destas, destaco as belíssimas faixas Heart Attack, Monkey e Overnite Religion.

Natural da philadelphia, Kurt Vile junta o psicadelismo pop às influências rock que o caracterizam, conciliando de forma inteligente traços do blues e, em particular neste álbum, a forte componente folk que fazem de Childish Prodigy um disco a ouvir com atenção.

Esteve na passada semana em Portugal para dois concertos, no Porto e em Lisboa, que acabaram por surpreender positivamente o público português. Kurt Vile vai continuar a evoluir e nós vamos continuar a acompanhar o seu trabalho e a sua, ainda curta, carreira musical.

Para os mais preguiçosos, o Fahrenheit 107.9 faz destaque durante toda a semana a este que é um disco contemporâneo que não esquece nunca a inspiração em nomes como Suicide, Neil Young e Bruce Springsteen.

Freeze!: Flaming Lips - Embryonic

Parecendo que não, foi já há 23 anos que os Flaming Lips editaram o seu álbum de estreia, e entretanto tiveram já tempo para fazer muita coisa. Desde as fortes influências garage de Hear it Is (1986), à pop clara e levemente surreal de Transmissions From the Satellite Heart (1993) à consagração com o grandioso e quase sinfónico The Soft Bulletin (1999), à passagem pelo universo do cinema com a esgotante produção Christmas on Mars (2008), um filme escrito e co-realizado por Wayne Coyne, e protagonizado e musicado por ele próprio e pelo resto dos Lips. Antes da aventura marciana, porém, o último disco que tinham editado era At War With the Mystics (2006), gravado já durante o início dos preparativos para a produção do filme, e que apesar de ser considerado por alguns como um prenúncio de um regresso do conjunto de Oklahoma às suas raízes rock, foi considerado pela maioria como uma desilusão.

Embryonic, o novo disco, aparecia então como oportunidade para aferir o que tinha acontecido depois destas últimas peripécias. Ora aconteceu que voltaram os Flaming Lips voltaram mesmo ao rock: percebe-se desde o início de “Convinced of the Hex”, faixa de abertura que pisca intencionalmente o olho a Tago Mago, dos Can, que adoptam uma atitude diferente da que se tinha visto nos últimos trabalhos. O seu mundo passou a ser povoado por guitarras mais frenéticas e muito mais directas, e Wayne Coyne, embora continue ocupado com os mesmos problemas de sempre (a morte, a vastidão do Universo, o ocasional animalzinho peludo ou sapo), parece agora posicionar-se de forma diferente quanto a eles, deixando durante a maior parte do álbum de lado o seu quase-croon.

Este é também o trabalho mais comprido (70 minutos) da carreira da banda, o que dá espaço para experiências variadas, e encaixa também perfeitamente na tradição psych-rock a que se ancora. Entre o peso exercido por “Worm Mountain” e a leveza auxiliada por vocoder de “The Impulse”, vai uma grande distância, como também entre “Evil”, provavelmente a canção mais convencional (para os Flaming Lips) do álbum, e “Powerless”, o longo tema central do álbum, que representa o hipnótico auge de uma tensão que o perpassa.

Em resumo, são os Flaming Lips no seu melhor, revelando vontade de inovar e de reinventar, e conseguindo-o num álbum fantástico. Boa razão para ouvir o Fahrenheit 107.9 durante esta semana.
