York Redoubt até 2010

York Redoubt, forte militar erigido no final do século XVIII, junto ao porto de Halifax.
Encerrado como base militar em 1956, é destino de passeatas domingueiras e dentro dos canhões pesados e obsoletos, ouve-se o chilrear de pássaros recém-nascidos.

O Primeiro longa duração dos Canadianos York Redoubt foi gravado em Truro, a meio-caminho entre Montcon e Halifax. E isto é importante.
À primeira audição, tranparece a sensação de “meio-termo”, de “ponto de equilibrio” entre duas coisas opostas. Por um lado é fácil reconhecer a influência da urgência e das rugosidades voluntárias que os veteranos de Montcon, Eric’s trip, tiveram na música deste quarteto. Por outro, é impossível esconder o dedo da Pop Explosion de Halifax e os coros “beatlenianos” disseminados pelos Sloan. Estes são os membros da equação York Redoubt , ao ponto de já terem sido evocados como “filhos bastardos de um cruzamento entre os Sonic Youth e os Fleet Foxes”, o que no fundo quer dizer quase a mesma coisa.

Após a edição da cassete “Cheap Funerals” e do EP “The Ryan Allen EP” (ambos disponíveis de forma gratuita na página da banda), chega até nós o seu primeiro longa duração homónimo com edição limitada exclusivamente em vinil pela hot money records.

Talvez o melhor cartão de visita para este disco seja a faixa que encerra o álbum. “Simple” é o seu nome e é um lobo indie com pele de carneiro punk.
Incontornáveis pelo agridoce com maior teor de mel temos “I Said Slightly” e “Are You Still”. Incontroláveis pela concentração acídica, encontramos “Division” e “Upside”. E todas a outras têm a quantidade certa dos ingredientes básicos, guitarras que guincham, coros que embalam, e uma secção rítmica a dois passos de se perder num descontrolo esquizofrénico imprevisível.
Um álbum para ouvir de uma assentada e que assenta numa audição.

Dos Circulatory System, diz-se que são a tela de trabalho de Will Cullen Hart, o espaço de experimentação do co-fundador da Elephant Six, tubo de ensaio para experimentações sónicas.
E, em Signal Morning, os Circulatory System não estão muito longe disso. Will Cullen Hart continua a sua exploração sonora, mas não está sozinho, os Olivia Tremor Control reúnem-se todos para gravar com ele, e sim, Jeff Magnum também lá está.
Signal Morning soa a despertador, soa a urgência do principio ao fim, quer nas guitarras quer nas letras de Hart. Começa frenéticamente com "Woodpecker Greeting Worker Ant", e a partir dai nós, já não mandamos mais. Hart é quem comanda. Deixa-nos respirar durante uns minutos em "The Breathing Universe" para voltar à carga em "Round Again", explica-nos o que se passa em "I You Me", mas nós fingimos que não percebemos, só porque queremos que continue.

Os Circulatory System não gravavam um disco hà 8 anos, e já ninguem parecia acreditar que ia voltar a acontecer. Ouvir os Circulatory Sistem de 2009, é como ouvir uma celebração de tudo o que passou pela Elephant Six, é como ter um best of cheio de faixas originais, é tudo o que precisavamos de Will Cullen Hart e numa altura em que lhe foi diagnosticado esclerose mutipla, é a maneira dele de nos dizer que ainda cá está, e com faixas como "The Spinning Continuous" ou "This Morning (We Remembered Everything)" só lhe podemos agradecer que se tenha lembrado de nós.

Childish Prodigy é o novo disco do senhor Kurt Vile, lançado em Outubro deste ano, com a Matador Records. Depois das produções caseiras que acabaram por ser editadas com a woodsist, God Is Saying This To You e Constant Hitmaker, o guitarrista principal da banda The War on Drugs assina agora com a editora dos Yo La Tengo e Jay Reatard.

Em modo de contador de histórias, Kurt Vile provoca-nos em Dead Alive, um dos mais sentidos temas deste disco. Por outro lado, a forte personalidade deste rapaz do Estado da Pennsylvania conforta-nos com temas como He's Alright ou com a tranquilidade de Blackberry Song. Para além destas, destaco as belíssimas faixas Heart Attack, Monkey e Overnite Religion.

Natural da philadelphia, Kurt Vile junta o psicadelismo pop às influências rock que o caracterizam, conciliando de forma inteligente traços do blues e, em particular neste álbum, a forte componente folk que fazem de Childish Prodigy um disco a ouvir com atenção.

Esteve na passada semana em Portugal para dois concertos, no Porto e em Lisboa, que acabaram por surpreender positivamente o público português. Kurt Vile vai continuar a evoluir e nós vamos continuar a acompanhar o seu trabalho e a sua, ainda curta, carreira musical.

Para os mais preguiçosos, o Fahrenheit 107.9 faz destaque durante toda a semana a este que é um disco contemporâneo que não esquece nunca a inspiração em nomes como Suicide, Neil Young e Bruce Springsteen.

Freeze!: Flaming Lips - Embryonic

Parecendo que não, foi já há 23 anos que os Flaming Lips editaram o seu álbum de estreia, e entretanto tiveram já tempo para fazer muita coisa. Desde as fortes influências garage de Hear it Is (1986), à pop clara e levemente surreal de Transmissions From the Satellite Heart (1993) à consagração com o grandioso e quase sinfónico The Soft Bulletin (1999), à passagem pelo universo do cinema com a esgotante produção Christmas on Mars (2008), um filme escrito e co-realizado por Wayne Coyne, e protagonizado e musicado por ele próprio e pelo resto dos Lips. Antes da aventura marciana, porém, o último disco que tinham editado era At War With the Mystics (2006), gravado já durante o início dos preparativos para a produção do filme, e que apesar de ser considerado por alguns como um prenúncio de um regresso do conjunto de Oklahoma às suas raízes rock, foi considerado pela maioria como uma desilusão.

Embryonic, o novo disco, aparecia então como oportunidade para aferir o que tinha acontecido depois destas últimas peripécias. Ora aconteceu que voltaram os Flaming Lips voltaram mesmo ao rock: percebe-se desde o início de “Convinced of the Hex”, faixa de abertura que pisca intencionalmente o olho a Tago Mago, dos Can, que adoptam uma atitude diferente da que se tinha visto nos últimos trabalhos. O seu mundo passou a ser povoado por guitarras mais frenéticas e muito mais directas, e Wayne Coyne, embora continue ocupado com os mesmos problemas de sempre (a morte, a vastidão do Universo, o ocasional animalzinho peludo ou sapo), parece agora posicionar-se de forma diferente quanto a eles, deixando durante a maior parte do álbum de lado o seu quase-croon.

Este é também o trabalho mais comprido (70 minutos) da carreira da banda, o que dá espaço para experiências variadas, e encaixa também perfeitamente na tradição psych-rock a que se ancora. Entre o peso exercido por “Worm Mountain” e a leveza auxiliada por vocoder de “The Impulse”, vai uma grande distância, como também entre “Evil”, provavelmente a canção mais convencional (para os Flaming Lips) do álbum, e “Powerless”, o longo tema central do álbum, que representa o hipnótico auge de uma tensão que o perpassa.

Em resumo, são os Flaming Lips no seu melhor, revelando vontade de inovar e de reinventar, e conseguindo-o num álbum fantástico. Boa razão para ouvir o Fahrenheit 107.9 durante esta semana.

como está bom de ver, o programa de hoje teve apenas uma hora... estágio para o feriado que se avizinha!

Passaram-se 12 anos desde a ultima gravação dos Polvo...
Antes do lançamento desse ultimo disco, Shapes, surgiram rumores de que a banda iria acabar, pois os seus membros principais, os dois vocalistas e guitarristas Dave Brylawsky e Ash Bowie andavam ocupados com outros projectos.
E esses rumores provaram corresponder à realidade, até dia 8 de Setembro, 2009.

In Prism chega às lojas de discos e marca não só a reunião dos ícones do math rock dos anos 90 (sem o baterista principal, Eddie Watkins... este foi substituído por Brian Quast, antigo baterista dos Cherry Valence) mas também o seu regresso à editora Merge.

Já no ano anterior eles tinham ameaçado voltar, aquando do seu concerto no mundialmente conhecido festival All Tomorrows Parties... E desde esse concerto, começaram a trabalhar juntos para o lançamento deste novo disco, In Prism.

Os anos que estiveram afastados, parece que não passaram por eles, pois a sua sonoridade mantém todas as suas características. Notam-se as influências de grandes bandas que evoluíram desde os 90's até hoje e que também sempre centraram o poder dos seus temas nas guitarras, como os lendários Sonic Youth ou Dinosaur Jr. que fazem parecer todas estas novas tecnologias completamente dispensáveis na criação de boas músicas e de grandes álbuns!

É certo que não se ouve neste disco nada que não se tenha ainda ouvido, quer em termos de composição das músicas, quer em termos de sonoridade. Ainda assim, este disco consegue ser diferente de tudo o que tem saído nos últimos anos, talvez precisamente pela ausência de instrumentos electrónicos e digitais que foram, em inúmeras bandas um caminho de evolução e crescimento.
