Destaque "Freeze!": Algiers - Algiers (Matador Records, 2015)

Em reflexão sobre o rock e a sua origem, facilmente admitimos a influência da música gospel, difundida a partir do início do século XX, no sul dos EUA.

A corroborar esta teoria, surge em 2015 o álbum homónimo de estreia dos Algiers, trio norte-americano criado em Atlanta, que se divide agora entre Londres e Nova Iorque. Composto por Franklin James Fisher, Ryan Mahan e Lee Tesche, a banda apresenta temas entre o punk e o gospel de protesto, com afirmações e respostas, alusão à espiritualidade, com coros, palmas e guitarras. 

Em 11 temas, cresce a sensibilização para a consciência social e as (ainda existentes) diferenças sociais provocadas por escolhas políticas e financeiras, tão presentes no zeitgeist de hoje.

Blood e Black Eunuch foram os primeiros singles lançados, em 2012, e surgem também no primeiro longa-duração. No entanto, os temas em realce neste disco são Remains, Old Girl, But She Was Not Flying e o tema untitled, que encerra o álbum, com o sampler de uma canção tradicional de gospel.

Lançado no início deste mês de Junho, pela Matador Records, Algiers é o destaque freeze! a ouvir de 22 a 26 de Junho, entre as 14h e as 15h no Fahrenheit 107.9, da Rádio Universidade de Coimbra.

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Blood Lust (2011)

Blood Lust é um álbum de sangue que acaba em morte. Cantam um qualquer ritual que leva a uma morte dolorosa e de um horror sem explicação. Mas, tentando não entrar pelo drama deste trio natural de Cambridge, a voz melódica não nos parece assustar muito. Pelo contrário, atrai-nos como um íman para o epicentro deste sacrifício, executando um processo de captação quer pelos riffs quer pela bateria que marca um compasso aparentemente neutro, mas, essencialmente por um teclado hipnótico.

O senhor Uncle Acid comanda o trio e sabe bem como o fazer, tanto no single entusiasmante I’ll Cut You Down, como na calma faixa bónus que encerra o disco. Não sabemos se o terror instaurado ao longo deste segunda longa-duração é fruto de vivências passadas ou se é por Cambrigde estar no caminho da zona mais negra do Reino Unido, contudo Blood Lust é uma perfeita conjugação entre o psicadelismo mais negro dos 70’s e a actualidade. Não vivem de influências apesar da comum comparação com Witch ou com os Electric Wizard. Este é um dos álbuns que nos escaparam em 2011 mas que merece agora toda a atenção do Fahrenheit 107.9, entre 13 e 17 de Fevereiro, no freeze!.
