Destaque FREEZE!: FIDLAR - FIDLAR (Mom + Pop)

Os FIDLAR (sigla para "Fuck It Dog, Life's a Risk") são uma banda de Los Angeles que logo no nome revelam a irreverência punk rock que transparece na sua música. Com efeito, nascidos na década de 90 ao som de bandas como The Offspring e Rancid, e com uma infância fortemente influenciada por programas de TV como Jackass ou Viva La Bam, era inevitável que a educação destes jovens passasse para nomes mais clássicos. E assim o nota a Mom + Pop, que ao editar o disco de estreia homónimo da trupe juvenil, os compara a nomes sonantes como Germs, Misfits ou Black Flag.

O referido disco é um testemunho a esse espírito de despreocupação rebelde. A missão aqui não é a de salvar o punk rock, mas torná-lo divertido. E os FIDLAR conseguem tal proeza, graças a uma combinação de guitarras distorcidas, ritmo acelerado, vocais gritados e letras sobre temáticas tão variadas como falta de dinheiro, cerveja barata e condições inapropriadas para o surf. Um conjunto de 14 músicas breves e animadas compõem este LP energético, a ouvir durante esta semana no destaque Freeze! do Fahrenheit 107.9. Como de costume, de segunda a sexta, entre as 14h e as 15h, na Rádio Universidade de Coimbra.

FREEZE - Pere Ubu - Lady from Shangai

Decorria o ano de 1978 quando os Pere Ubu lançaram, respectivamente, em Janeiro e Novembro, "The Modern Dance" e "Dub Housing", albuns que tornaram este colectivo norte americano de Cleveland, Ohio, em estrelas maiores do firmamento pós-punk. Estrelas maiores que estiveram sempre a margem de um estilo, uma vez que a sua obra acabou por tocar no industrial (em certos momentos a voz de David Thomas assemelha-se a de Blixa Bargeld) e art rock.Mas foi a veia avant-garde que os acabou por distinguir da "concorrência".

Em boa verdade, "The Lady from Shangai" não nos oferece nada de particularmente novo, olhando para trás na discografia do grupo. Contudo demonstra que apesar da idade e da experiência que carregam nos ombros, os Pere Ubu não se deixaram ficar por uma forma vencedora, explorando, embora timidamente, novos territórios (para tal basta escutar o bem electrónico tema inicial "Thanks" que sem qualquer tipo de dúvidas melhor representa "Lady from Shangai)

A 10 de Novembro de 2012, The Reverberation Appreciation Society (colectivo responsável pelo Austin Psych Fest) em associação com a Fuzz Club Records, editaram um LP duplo de título: The Reverb Conspiracy Vol. One - disco destaque FREEZE! escolhido a dedo e ouvido, para esta terceira semana de Janeiro de 2013, onde a escassez de novos lançamentos discográficos continua, por enquanto, a permanecer...

The Reverb Conspiracy Vol. One é uma compilação que inclui 19 bandas europeias com 19 temas, na sua maioria inéditos. Abrange o lado mais negro do Rock contemporâneo do velho continente, com um cunho mais ou menos psicadélico, além da presença de drones, guitarras reverberantes e inúmeras reminiscências que reflectem a multiplicidade de influências musicais que vão desde os Siouxsie & The Banshees; The Cure, Sonic Youth, New Order, Nick Cave, Jim Morrison e outros mais.

Neste LP, a escolha é realmente vasta e designar um ou dois favoritos poderá tornar-se, para muitos, uma tarefa árdua. Demonstrando assim que o rock europeu está em forma e a sua escuta recomenda-se vivamente. 
A merecer notoriedade os gregos A Victim Of Society, os ingleses Lola Colt ou mesmo os islandeses Dead Skeletons que conquistam com o seu Kundalini Eyes. 

Esta colectânea encontra-se disponível numa edição limitada, com masterização a cargo de Brett Orrison, engenheiro de som dos norte-americanos The Black Angels.

Para além desta compilação constituir uma "montra auditiva" do cenário rock na Europa, é também  um disco solidário, uma vez que parte dos lucros revertem a favor da Child's i Foundation, organização responsável pelo acolhimento e auxílio de crianças abandonadas em Uganda.

The Reverb Conspiracy Vol. One está em destaque até esta 6af no Fahrenheit 107.9, como sempre no éter da Rádio Universidade de Coimbra, de 2af à 6af, às 14h em 107.9 FM ou através de ruc.fm.

Royal Trux, "Accelerator" (Drag City, 1998/ Domino, 2012)

O mês de Janeiro é tradicionalmente parco em novidades discográficas, pausa aproveitada pelo Destaque Freeze!  para recordar algumas das mais emblemáticas reedições de 2012, começando por este álbum originalmente editado em 1998 na Drag City, isto depois da  Virgin Records ter posto a  mala na escada à dupla constituída por Jennifer Herrema e Neil Hagerty .

Tão pouco valor atribuiu a editora major aquele trabalho, que até lhes entregou as masters do álbum que viria a ser o terceiro da trilogia   iniciada com "Thank You" e o sétimo álbum de estúdio do duo norte-americano que se separou em 2001.

Catorze anos volvidos, "Accelerator" estabeleceu-se como arquétipo do electro-rock, com guitarras e vozes processadas até ao limite distorção electrónica. 

Influências tão díspares como as de Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground ou T. Rex só poderiam resultar num disco caótico e  incongruente que requer alguma habituação. Com o passar do tempo, por entre o ruído, o ouvido vai desvendando a riqueza de melodias e ritmos, razão que justificou certamente a reediçaõ de "Accelerator" pela Domino Records em Setembro de 2012.
