ainda nos custa esconder o estado de choque em que a notícia da morte de jay reatard nos deixou. quando, há dois anos, tropeçámos na obra prima que é blood visions, foi impossível não ficarmos excitados com o que o futuro podia reservar a este jovem de memphis, tennessee, cidade onde nasceu, viveu, e na passada quarta-feira morreu.

estamos, como não podia deixar de ser devastados pelo seu desaparecimento prematuro. é como se um amigo próximo tivesse morrido, e não conseguimos esconder a tristeza por tudo aquilo que jay reatard não teve oportunidade de nos deixar. ainda assim, depois da edição de blood visions, o legado musical daquele que aclamamos unanimemente como o último verdadeiro punk-rocker continuou a crescer, sobretudo depois do contrato assinado com a matador records, que trouxe um sem-fim de singles e um álbum de longa duração em dois anos de actividade nesta editora, bem como colaborações ocasionais com outros artistas. bradford cox, próximo de jay reatard, deixou no blog dos deerhunter o testemunho que transcrevemos de seguida. fazemos nossas as palavras dele, e relembramos a velha máxima: punks never die. um dia destes apanhamos-te por aí, jay.

"Jay was what few people have the capacity to be. He created an undeniably classic album that contained so much pain transfered to tape in such an explosive way that it made you feel different after hearing it. He was transgressive and honest. His flaws were something he focused on and overdubbed and distorted until they made you forget who he really was - a person with feelings and a good heart. He loved music and worked hard from a young age to pursue it. He was a self-made and unmade man. I am truly sickened to see him go."

aquilo que começou inicialmente como um pequeno projecto a solo do canadiano josh mcintyre foi gradualmente ganhando fama em vários blogs da internet numa altura em que a blogomania ainda se encontra num dos picos no que toca a divulgação de novas bandas a quererem um pedaço do bolo da hype.

acompanhando este reconhecimento e após juntar alguns amigos ao alinhamento da banda lança o primeiro registo, youth/venom, um single 7'' pela captured tracks. Dois EP's mais tarde (o primeiro, "thrills", pela mexican summer, e o segundo, "tambourine", pela paper bag records) surge o álbum de estreia "concepts", contando como segundo registo pela editora paper bag records, editado para o público em outubro do passado ano 2009.

a dar início ao álbum temos uma das faixas mais celebrizadas da banda desde o início do seu reconhecimento, "youth tunes" que já foi incluída em três dos quatro registos editados até à data e que dá uma breve perspectiva do que o álbum tem para nos oferecer, sendo caracterizado por uma onda de lo-fi distorcido com uma batida repetitiva e uma voz marcadamente quase que irreconhecível acompanhada de samples e riffs descontrolados que acompanha o resto do álbum. "youth tunes" conta, também, já com um vídeo que estreou no site da pitchfork. sim, as guitarras parece que já levaram muita pancada, os níveis parecem estar demasiado altos, as palavras de josh mcintyre são imperceptíveis e todo o álbum parece que foi gravado num estúdio alugado a 5€ à hora, mas é todo o aglomerado dessas características que dão a mística merecida ao álbum e que o tornam simultaneamente um álbum nostálgico, remetendo-nos para as origens do shoegazing, e contemporâneo.

concepts fica então como destaque numa semana académicamente angustiante para tantos, para ver se alguns relaxam ao som dos 107.9.

Freeze: Do Make Say Think - Other Truths

Os Do Make Say Think (DMST) estão juntos desde 1995-1996. Hoje, apenas um dos cinco fundadores não está no colectivo formado por Ohad Benchetrit, James Payment, Justin Small, Charles Spearin e Dave Mitchell (este último está na projecto desde 1998 e depois da saída de Jason MacKenzie). Conheceram-se na Universidade de Toronto e começaram a tocar nas instalações da rádio da universidade. Agora, na primeira semana de 2010, são destaque nas tardes na Rádio Universidade…de Coimbra.

Ao longo destes, praticamente 15 anos, os DMST foram consolidando o seu lugar no panorama do rock instrumental/pós-rock e, se calhar, juntamente com os A Silver Mt. Zion têm a árdua tarefa de colorir os caminhos que os GY!BE começaram por desenhar no final da década de 90. Ao 6º disco (+2 EP`s) os DMST criam a sua obra com menos composições, apenas 4: Do, Make, Say e Think, e apresentam-se novamente com o emblema da Constellation.

Ao longo dos pouco mais de 40 minutos é fácil encontrar algumas das marcas que poderão (tentar) definir a sonoridade dos DMST. O disco começa com pujança de rock e riff em riste…caminha ainda por alguma experimentação e pisca o olho ao Jazz - os instrumentos de sopro em muito ajudam. Os minutos finais de Other Truths fazem-se de forma calma, quase ambiental. Sempre fizeram música onde a palavra nunca foi necessária para transmitir sensações e, Other Truths não é excepção apesar de contar com a participação vocal de The Akron Family e dos Lullabye Arkestra.

O disco é produzido por Ohad Benchetrit, Justin Small e Charles Spearin que para além dos DMST e da produção também vão ocupando o tempo com outros projectos como Broken Social Scene, KC Accidental, Lullabye Arkestra…

…situação que não nos chateia nadinha.

Sem fazer, dizer ou pensar muito, Other Truths é para escutar ao longo desta semana no Fahrenheit 107.9 da Rádio Universidade de Coimbra.
