Freeze! The Black Lips - Arabia Mountain [27 de Junho a 1 de Julho]

Arabia Mountain é o nome do novo disco da banda natural de Atlanta, Black Lips. E o que há a dizer sobre este registo? Podia resumir tudo numa só palavra: maravilhoso!

Ao ouvir temas como Bicentennial Man ou Modern Art é impossível não fazermos uma ligação ao Garage dos anos 60. Lembra-nos uns The Sonics, uns 13th Floor Elevators ou mesmo um Surfers Are Back, tema do primeiro álbum dos londrinos The Barracudas, isto com o belo toque já típico dos Black Lips, que nos garante toda a contemporaneidade que precisamos de ter em 2011. Aqui temos a prova de que este, para além de ser um dos álbuns deste Verão, é também um disco intemporal. É o sucessor de 200 Million Thousand, que primou por ter temas belíssimos e de amores perdidos como Trapped In A Basement ou mesmo Take My Heart ou as vozes mais distorcidas de Starting Over. Contudo, em Arabia Mountain, temos um som mais limpo e igualmente bem conseguido. Desta vez, temos que agradecer a Mark Ronson, o britânico que já produziu The Like, Amy Winehouse ou mesmo Christina Aguilera. A verdade é que me surpreendeu neste trabalho com os Black Lips, e acho que posso até arriscar dizer que conseguiu, se isto for possível, melhorar o trabalho da banda norte-americana. O mérito cabe também ao senhor Lotus Plaza, que produziu dois fantásticos temas deste álbum, entre os quais o primeiro single, lançado em Março, de nome Go Out and Get It.

Arabia Mountain foi lançado no início deste mês de Junho pela Vice Records e é, claro, digno de um lugar no freeze! desta semana, no Fahrenheit 107.9.

A ouvir: O álbum todo! E muitas vezes as faixas Bicentennial Man, Mad Dog e The Lie.

Esta semana o Fahrenheit dá destaque ao segundo álbum de originais dos Norte Americanos, oriundos de New York City, Battles !!

Trio formado no ano de 2002 por músicos, cuja experiência em outros projectos musicais, muito contribuiu para a proclamação de Mirrored como uma das agradáveis surpresas do ano de 2007. A um experimentalismo pouco dissimulado centrado nas guitarras, baixos e teclados de Ian Williams (ex membro dos Don Caballero e dos Storm&Stress) e Dave Konopka (ex membro dos Lynx) e na percussão de John Stanier (ex membro dos Helment) os Battles agregam ainda influências de áreas tão dispares dentro do rock como o rock progressivo ou a rapidez rítmica do 'Math Rock'. Tudo isto se resume a uma fusão sonora de ritmos e escalas que, embora já antes ouvida, surgem em 2007 com um aroma algo refrescante.

Já Gloss Drop, editado pela Warp Records (bem como o 1º Mirrored) a 6 de Junho no Reino Unido e a 7 nos Estados Unidos, não parece ser mais que um "normal" seguimento de Mirrored, quando uma mutação sonora intrigante seria certamente mais proveitosa para a carreira destes nova iorquinos. No entanto, a presença de algumas personalidades musicais no disco, distraem convenientemente o ouvinte do contínuo sonoro dos Battles. Os participantes são Kazu Makino (vocalista e guitarrista dos Blonde Redhead), o cantor e compositor Gary Numan, o Japonês Yamantaka Eye (ligado ao já influente noise Japonês) e o chileno Matias Aguayo que participa em Ice Cream, primeiro single do disco lançado em 12 polegadas e digitalmente a 23 de Maio de 2011.

Em suma um disco potencialmente muito bom mas que acaba por cair juntamente com a ambição destes nova iorquinos. Aqui fica uma mostra com Ice Cream, o 1º e único single até agora editado de Gloss Drop.

Numa altura em que se respira política no nosso pequeno jardim, aproveitamos também para o fazer, embora noutros termos. Deep Politics é o mais recente trabalho para os norte-americanos Grails, lançado no passado mês de Março. Como habitual, não se puseram a cantar, nem ousaram entrar por caminhos diferentes. Limitaram-se a fazer o que fazem bem, e pode dizer-se que se esmeraram. Jogos de guitarras eléctricas e acústicas, ambientes pós-rock mais densos e carregados e as teclas solitárias de um piano são apenas alguns dos elementos que podemos encontrar neste álbum.
Um álbum para ouvir, durante toda a semana, aqui, no fahrenheit 107.9.
