Tom Waits é uma personagem monstruosamente grande que se ostenta cheio de portas e janelas, dividido infinitamente por divisões grandes e pequenas, e construído por aquele complexo material que se chama América, e que, por assim se chamar, tudo inclui, com o seu habitual tempero. Cada álbum de Tom Waits é uma viagem pelos incertos meandros da sua personalidade, numa visita guiada pelo próprio ao próprio. Cada álbum de Tom Waits é apenas uma outra visão de um mesmo modelo que, por se revelar tão extraordinário, acaba por nunca se gastar. E é por isso que Bad as Me se apresenta confortável, seguro, com alicerces que não caem.

Em 2011, com 61 anos, o Tom Waits que se nos mostra deixa de parte a agressividade de Real Gone, seu último registo de estúdio, e varia brusca mas coerentemente por entre euforias e ritmos fortes, em ambiente de festa e delírio, e o banco de veludo do piano, ao canto do lúgubre bar, em que a voz perde sinais do bagaço e se entranha em lamentos, dedicatórias, e palavras de amor. Talvez haja uma calmaria no Waits de Bad as Me, como se o alcoól próprio que lhe corre nas veias se acalmasse, e este voltasse aos dias de Small Changes, mas com uma cabeça envelhecida 35 anos em casco de carvalho e um chapéu de coco. Pois se há alturas em que o músico acorda subitamente e se ouve o rugido forte e intenso das guitarras, da percussão, e do próprio gigante que é Waits, o que fica são esses momentos em que a sua voz se senta, e acompanhando um contrabaixo, revisita as teclas brancas e pretas e parece evocar os beijos de uma Billie Holiday, os amores tidos e perdidos, uma paz que parece teimar em não aparecer, um amargo que lhe agrada a vida.

Bad as Me é assim mais uma peça no intrincado labirinto que é Tom Waits e, portanto, detentora da quase adimensionalidade e intemporalidade a que há muito este nos tem vindo a habituar.

Do blues rock psicadélico para o hip-hop, num programa que se quer de rock. Uma escolha arriscada, irreverente? Nem por isso. Mais do que um género musical, o rock é uma filosofia de vida, tão bem representada pelos Death Grips, colectivo de Sacramento, composto pelo produtor Andy Morin "Flatlander", MC Ride e Zach Hill (sim, o baterista dos Hella).

É impossível descrever “Exmilitary”. A primeira escuta, mesmo que rápida, é assustadora. Alienante, na verdade. Tal torna-se difícil quando convivemos diariamente com rappers como Tyler, The Creator – mas é possível. E os Death Gripps estão aqui para o provar. A energia é punk. A paranóia deixa-nos nervosos, violentos, com vontade de esmorrar o companheiro. As cacofonias, cativantes. A provocação gratuita, uma constante (existirá melhor exemplo que rimar sobre “Interstellar Overdrive” dos Pink Floyd?)

The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz podia bem pertencer aos idílicos anos do auge do blues-rock psicadélico, em que os Cream ensaiavam num qualquer estúdio, Jimi Hendrix se lançava em experiências arrojadas, e os Led Zeppelin arrasavam salas de espectáculo. É todo este enlouquecido mas metódico ambiente que está presente nas divagações em guitarra ao longo do álbum, nos longos improvisos que povoam cromaticamente o espaço musical, numa pintura psicadélica inconstante, movendo-se por entre trovões e calmarias, numa intensa onda de energia. Há espaço para experiências e divergências, para uma vivência clara de banda, numa individualidade criativa que contribui para o sentimento de unidade, de colaboração construtiva.

The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz podia bem pertencer aos idílicos anos do auge do blues-rock psicadélico, mas não pertence, e foi lançado esta semana, e foi construído por uma banda de rapazes formada em 2003. Quem compõe esta música não são já jovens que viveram o verão de 67, San Francisco e  o boom do LSD, mas habitantes de um século XXI em revolução constante, que não deixa de transparecer na música que tocam.

The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz é, por tudo isto, o primeiro Freeze! da grelha 2011/2012 da Rádio Universidade de Coimbra. O terceiro álbum dos norte-americanos Radio Moscow, em destaque no Fahrenheit durante a próxima semana, para ouvir em cada uma das horas. Das 14h às 16h, já a partir de hoje.
